De club beschouwt zichzelf, met meer dan 1800 leden, als de grootste van het Noorden — een positie die ze al jaren invult met een breed en actief verenigingsleven op het sportcomplex Corpus den Hoorn. Van de jongste jeugd tot aan de leeftijdsspecifieke senioren-competities: GHBS biedt in vrijwel elke categorie hockey aan. Het complex zelf is door de jaren heen flink uitgebreid. GHBS beschikt inmiddels over vijf kunstgrasvelden: een semi-waterveld, een zandveld en drie watervelden. Dat is voor een noordelijke club een indrukwekkend uitrustingsniveau, en het laat zien dat de club haar ambities ook in beton en kunstgras uitdrukt. ## Eerste teams Dames 1 draait dit seizoen een solide Eerste klasse-competitie. Met een vierde plek in Poule B en 37 punten uit 22 wedstrijden eindigden ze de reguliere fase in de bovenste regionen van de poule. De ploeg sloot het seizoen sterk af: twee zeges op rij, waaronder een overtuigende 5-3 thuis in de laatste wedstrijd en een 0-2 zege uit bij Ede D1. Een tussendoorste thuisnederlaag tegen Twente D1 (1-2) was een klein dipje in een verder stabiel seizoensverloop. Voor wie de noordelijke hockeycompetities volgt, is GHBS D1 een vaste naam in de bovenste helft van de Eerste klasse. ## Nuttig om te weten GHBS speelt in een groen-witgeblokt tenue — een kleurencombinatie die op de velden van Corpus den Hoorn direct herkenbaar is. In het clubhuis worden jaarlijks diverse themafeesten gegeven, wat illustreert dat het clubleven bij GHBS verder reikt dan de negentig minuten op het veld. De club heeft een technisch directeur en een prestatiemanager in dienst, wat voor een niet-Hoofdklasse-club duidt op een professionele organisatiestructuur. Coach Joost Wevers stelde ooit dat het geen incident was dat GHBS bij de noordelijke jeugdtop hoort: "Al eerder is er door GHBS vol ingezet op de jeugd. Zeker bij de meisjestak is de aanwas ieder jaar zo groot dat er flink geïnvesteerd kan worden om daadwerkelijk een goede jeugdopleiding op te zetten. Dat betaalt zich nu uit." Die jeugdinvestering is zichtbaar in het brede team-aanbod dat de club jaar na jaar weet te vullen. ## Traditie en geschiedenis GHBS werd in 1928 opgericht door cursisten en scholieren van de Gemeentelijke Hogere Burger School, waar de clubnaam van is afgeleid. In dat jaar was Nederland in de ban van de Olympische Spelen in Amsterdam, en in Groningen volgden een aantal scholieren de goede prestaties van het Nederlandse hockeyteam op de radio. Dat enthousiasme resulteerde direct in een nieuwe hockeyclub. Na een decennium op het complex aan het Van Starkenborghkanaal volgde in 1973 een verhuizing naar het huidige sportcomplex Corpus den Hoorn. Al in 1963 had GHBS zich onderscheiden door als eerste hockeyclub in de regio een clubhuis te laten bouwen.
